Do Not Live Someone Else's Life

"Do not live to satisfy the expectations of others."

- Ichiro Kishimi

Dear Reader,

From the moment we are born, other people's judgements, expectations, and ideas are put upon us.

It is important to recognize that these things are out of our control.

We have no say in what others expect of us.

We have no say in what others want from us.

It is entirely within their own mind and their own thinking.

However, some will spend their entire lives attempting to appease others. They do whatever is asked of them, even if it is detrimental to their own well-being.

This way of living only leaves someone a prisoner.

It is nothing more than a trap - one that has become known officially as "people-pleasing".

This isn't to say that making people happy or doing things for others is bad.

This isn't to say that we shouldn't listen to the opinions of those who care about us.

But we must keep one thing in constant knowledge, and that is this: the only thing we can control is ourselves. We only have power over our own judgements, thoughts, actions and expectations. We cannot control those of others.

Spending your life attempting to cater to what is fundamentally outside of your control will only leave you as a prisoner.

Yet the inverse is also true. Focusing on what is within your own power will give you power.

Never forget this.

Today's Reflection:

In what ways does people-pleasing lead to a miserable life? How can you be kind and love others without crossing the line into people-pleasing?

Peace, love, and joy to you.

Your friend,
