The Greatest Thief of Joy
"Those who stand on tiptoes do not stand firmly. Those who rush ahead do not get very far."
- Lao Tzu
Dear Reader,
There is a desire that is innate to all human beings.
It is a desire that goes deeper than the one to be healthy, knowledgeable, wealthy, abundant, and so on.
It is the desire to be healthier, wealthier, and smarter than others.
When this desire is leaned into, we view our fellow human beings as our competitors.
We view every single aspect of life as an opportunity to prove how great we are.
And when things do not go our way, they become evidence of our worthlessness.
This type of life is not one that is conducive to happiness.
So, how are we to rid ourselves of this desire?
It is to measure yourself not against others, but against virtue.
Seek it out and align with it as closely as possible.
If you are to compete, compete only with yourself, and if you are to be better, attempt to outdo only your previous efforts in goodness.
Through this, you will cease to see others as your competitors.
You will cease to see every one of life's outcomes as a measure of your self-worth.
And through closer alignment with virtue, goodness will flow from you like warmth from the sun.
Peace, love, and joy to you.
